Single #32 - The Boundary
The boundary. Not the border. All this fixation on borders. Borders are temporary, man-made. A boundary is something a bit fuzzier by itself, an area of change or transition between more fully defined things, like the shoreline between land and water. Or civilization and wilderness. The conscious and the unconscious. The known and unknown. The meat and the bun of a White Castle. There are lots of unlabeled things in flux, a lot can happen there. If you find yourself stuck in a rut somehow, maybe that’s your way out.
LYRICS
Now up here on the boundary
Blue waters around me
Been ten years and counting
Think that I’m gonna stay
Too much noise, too much confusion
I was just living a life of illusion
Seemed cutting ties was my only solution
So I wandered away
I headed up north where the road meets the water
Didn’t have money, I couldn’t get over
I stood there thinking with a bag on my shoulder
A man walked up to me
He gave me a job to pay for my supper
Cutting bait, taking people over
Across the bay to the point out yonder
Two or three times a day
Now up here on the boundary
Blue sky all around me
Ain’t nobody found me
Think that I’m gonna stay
Hear the laugh of the loon
Yeah before I knew I was laughing too
Here the winter comes soon
Yeah I thought I’d leave
But now I think I’ll stay right here
For another year
Now up here on the boundary
Blue sky all around me
Yeah they don’t ever doubt me
And the people are kind
Hear the laugh of the loon
Yeah before I knew I was laughing too
Here the winter comes soon
Yeah I thought I’d leave
But now I think I’ll stay right here
For another year
Now up here on the boundary
Blue waters around me
Been ten years and counting
Think that I’m gonna stay
